Northern Shoveler

[Northern Shoveler]

Photographed at Dutch Gap in Virginia. Shovelers have comb-like structures called lamellae on the edges of their oversized bills. As they dip their bills in the water, the lamellae strain out tiny crustaceans and other food items.
