Work Experience

Nanometrics
Ottawa, Ontario
Canada
Contract Test Programmer
June 2008 - April 2009

As a contract programmer at Nanometrics, I created test sequences for verifying the functionality of seismometers and satellite modems before they went to market. This involved writing scripts under a custom test framework system, as well as developing Windows C++/NI-DAQ applications. My *nix skills were useful in working with the satellite modem which ran a real-time Linux OS in firmware. I also made improvements to existing tests for other products that resulted in significant speed gains.
Ellistar Sensor Systems

Software/Firmware Designer
May 2004 - September 2004

As part of the core team at Ellistar, a start-up specializing in radar systems, I developed software (C/C++) and firmware for Ellistar's flagship product: a device which detects people and animals near vehicles to avert accidents. With the help of a hardware engineer, I implemented the DSP (Digital Signal Processing) code which filters and analyzes real-time input to detect moving targets. I also assisted in developing the interface between the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) board and a personal computer, which allows Ellistar to give graphical demonstrations of the product in action.

Programmer Analyst
December 1997 - June 2001

My time with Quantum Mastech, a consulting firm, was spent on a long-term contract with Industry Canada. Working for Strategis, Industry Canada's public website, I developed and maintained database-intensive, web-based applications in C, Oracle Pro*C and Perl. These included the Canadian Importers Database, the Steps to Growth Capital query/report system, and Performance Plus (a financial performance benchmarking tool for the use of small businesses).

Network Assistant
February 1996 - August 1997

My primary duties at the law library were to monitor the student lab, to assist students and faculty with law-related and word-processing software, and to tutor faculty in the use of their Linux accounts. However, I also performed a number of programming projects as needed, including intranet web applications and MiniSQL programming.

Programmer Intern
January 1996 - June 1997

As an intern with Ohio Online, a corporate ISP and Ohio news provider, I worked on a number of projects in web design and intranet programming, including a calendar application that came to be used throughout the company. I also helped to maintain the SGI IRIX webserver and to install new software on it as needed.
