A Tiny Moment

[A Tiny Moment]

I got this picture in Gatineau Park, in a spot where the underbrush teemed with tiny, hyperactive creatures that skittered in and out of view. After many failed attempts to photograph or even get a decent look at one of them, I finally pointed my camera at one of the tree holes that they were scurrying in and out of, and rapid-fired my shutter, producing about twenty pictures of an empty hole and one picture of this shrew! For scale, that hole was maybe an inch and a half wide: shrews are smaller even than mice. It's impossible to say which species of shrew, unfortunately--there are a number of lookalike species in the area.
